The tech sector, like any other sectors in Kenya is growing at a fast rate. With access to information, the digital revolution brings undeniable benefits. However, there's a gap among the consumers of ICT services and products concerning data privacy and cybersecurity. Today we'll explore the concept of cybersecurity and how to stay safe online. Cybersecurity refers to the state of being protected against criminal or unauthorized use of electronic data. Your personal data including name, contact and location information is a crucial asset that should only be shared with trusted and authentic entities. The government of Kenya has taken steps to address the cybersecurity and data privacy concerns. The Data Protection Act of 2019, for instance, outlines the rights of an individual in regards to their personal data. The act imposes obligations to entities that collect and process personal data. You have the right to know why your data is collected, which data is collected and how it is processed. You can also revoke access to your data at any time. The Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act of 2018 deals with cybercrimes including hacking, unauthorized access to computer systems and interference with data. These acts empower you to control how your data is used by organizations that collect your personal data. How do we make good use of these acts and stay safe online? Here are some tips to help you stay safe online;
  • Be cautious about what information you share online. Be mindful about social media platforms and avoid sharing to much personal information that might expose you
  • Beware of phishing and scams. Dont fall for online tricks. Dont click on suspicious links in emails or messages
  • Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication whenever possible. Avoid using one password for multiple platforms
